Elizabeth
Prout 1807-1862 |

Elizabeth is a bit of a
mystery. Records record the baptism of Elizabeth Prout in St Agnes on 23rd
October 1808 to the parents Robert & Ann Prout. This is the wrong
parents, the parents in this story are Abraham & Christian Prout. In the transcribed records available
on the web, there is no other Elizabeth born around this time in St Agnes. I
will have to do some more investigating! On 23rd April
1826 an Elizabeth Prout, married William Barkla in St Agnes. They lived for a
time in St Agnes, before moving to Ireland and later Australia. They had 14
children. The first four where born in St Agnes, some in Ireland, and the
eldest in Australia. |

A number of these names match the children of Abraham & Christian Prout, i.e Elizabeth’s
brothers and sisters. The name of the fourth child is noteworthy. |

Elizabeth died in Rose Hill near Auburn
South Australia on the 29th of July 1863. In the Prout family Bible,
handed down from Abraham
& Christian Prout’s
descendants there is a record of Elizabeth dying in Australia in 1862. Whilst the dates don’t quite agree, is this one
person, or where there two Elizabeth’s, both born in St Agnes and moving to Australia? Was she the daughter of Robert & Ann, but for
some reason adapted by Abraham & Christian? |
