|
At the time of Jack’s
birth his father was working as a manager for the GPO in the new telephone department, which meant
the family was moving around the country a lot. Jack was born on 14th
December 1899, at 138 Wilmslow Road, Chorlton. These day’s this is part on
the Greater Manchester area. |
|
At the time of the 1901
census in April, the family was still living at the same address. |

Jack married Millicent Richards
and they had one son. He in turn had 3 daughters. |

Jack Prout, some tine in the 1960’s |
|
Jack was an artist who
worked for D.C Thompson and drew the Black Bob cartons for The Dandy comic.
He also drew some other cartons in Thompson publications icluding The Beano. D.C Thompson was, and still is based in
Dundee Scotland. It is not know if Jack moved there for the job, or got the
job after moving there, but he certainly lived there during world war II. In the
late 1960’s after his retirement Jack & Millie, moved to St Ives in
Cornwall where they lived with his sister Nancy |
|
This was the house that
Nancy and her father Thomas had shared until his death in
1967. The house was divided into 2 flats. Jack & Millie had the ground
floor, and Nancy the first floor. In the attic of the house, Jack created a
studio, where he continued to draw, and carried out occasional work for DC
Thompson. |

|
|
Jack continued to live
there until his death in the 1978 |

Various people have
contacted me saying how they have been influenced by Jack’s work. These
include: Mark Richards
an outdoor writer living in Cumbria |
